A solution of diamine silver hydroxide is called a tunnel reagent.
When 10% silver nitrate (AgNO₃) and 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) are mixed in equal proportions, first silver hydroxide (AgOH) is produced and then silver hydroxide decomposes to form precipitation of silver oxide (Ag₂O). Adding a solution of excess ammonium hydroxide (NH₄OH) to dissolve the precipitate produces a solution of colorless diamine silver hydroxide [Ag (NH₃) ₂] OH (aq). This colorless solution is called tunnel reagent.
